About

Designed in Cuenca, Ecuador, the project blends various living styles, combining buildings and houses to create a cohesive development that adapts to different uses. While the project began with a defined set of business goals, I had the artistic freedom to explore its formal expression. The two buildings, positioned on each end of the project, elegantly frame the development, creating a smooth transition between the different types of residences while anchoring the entire complex visually and functionally.

Overview

The project is divided into four phases. The first phase involved constructing the road and ramp to navigate the steep slope of the terrain. The second phase focused on building the first structure, as the owner prioritized selling that one first. The subsequent phases included the construction of the houses, followed by the completion of the final building.

In both the buildings and houses, I prioritized the privacy of residents by thoughtfully integrating features such as balconies, strategically placed vegetation, or a combination of both. These design elements offer personal space while creating natural barriers between homes. Additionally, by constructing the first building at the entrance, I established a sense of seclusion for the entire complex, enhancing privacy and the overall atmosphere from the outset.

Consequently, the building becomes the focal point of the project, where we see references to what happens within the complex: the importance of private spaces, the integration of green areas within the development, and the ability to expand interior spaces through the use of balconies. By using these elements—such as balconies, courtyards, and terraces—we are able to create in-between spaces that foster a seamless flow between different areas of the design. These transitional zones not only enhance connectivity within the project but also provide a balance between privacy and openness.

Materials

The materials and colors used in the project are inspired by Ecuadorian post-colonial architecture, blended with elements of postmodernism. This unique combination is exemplified by the use of both brick and concrete, showcasing the harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary styles. Additionally, integrating vegetation throughout the project not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also fosters a connection between the built environment and nature. By incorporating greenery into the design, we create a more inviting atmosphere, promote biodiversity, and contribute to the overall sustainability of the development. This approach enriches the living experience for residents while paying homage to Ecuador’s rich architectural heritage.
